Looking ahead, Subaru Corporation recently announced Subaru's vision to eliminate traffic accident deaths involving Subaru vehicles by 2030. Already, the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP) is delivering new vehicles with higher rigidity, higher strength, lighter weight, better rolling resistance and more responsive steering.
Ensuring our vehicles are Better Where It Matters – designing and building cars that are as safe as possible – is something we’re rightly proud of. In the 1960s, well before crash testing was mandatory, Subaru was undertaking pioneering collision tests. Today we continue to pick up accolades and high ratings in collision safety tests globally, but we believe that it’s on the road where safety performance really matters.
Safety technology has never been so intelligent, powerful and advanced. Subaru continues to pioneer active, passive and pre-crash safety systems to give drivers and passengers supreme confidence and peace of mind on the road. It’s an all-round safety principle that we passionately adhere to.
A whistle-top tour of major Subaru markets quickly reveals the extent of the many safety accolades.
In the US, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the Subaru marque with seven IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKS + for the 2019 Ascent, Outback, Legacy and Crosstrek (known as the XV in the UK) SUVs, and the Impreza.
IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: 'crashworthiness' – how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash – and 'crash avoidance and mitigation' – technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. TOP SAFETY PICKS are given to vehicles that earn good ratings in the IIHS’s crashworthiness tests. The Plus ‘+’ recognition is added for winners with a superior front crash prevention rating and good headlights.
The all-new Forester in the US was awarded the 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK with the highest possible rating of Good for six crashworthiness tests and Superior for front crash prevention.
In Japan, Subaru has performed equally as well. In 2018, the all-new Forester won the top rating in the JNCAP preventative safety assessment whilst in 2019, the Subaru XV and Impreza won the Grand Prix in JNCAP Collision Safety Performance Assessment award with the highest score ever. An amazing achievement underlining the ability to unite driver, passenger and pedestrian protection measures.
In Australia and New Zealand, Subaru have scored top safety ratings for the whole range in the ANCAP car safety assessment program carried out by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA). With all models scoring a 5 star rating when they have been tested.
Making safety a feature.
Before seeing how Subaru has performed in Europe, it’s worth recapping briefly on some of the innovative safety technologies that are fitted across the majority of the range as standard.
A range of active safety features give owners the control and confidence to enjoy driving, whatever the weather or road conditions. These include Rear Vehicle Detection, High Beam Assist and of course permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive that offers exceptional handling and increased stability at all times.
Passive safety technologies ensure that Subarus are designed to give drivers the best possible protection if an accident or impact is unavoidable. A cabin-protecting layout, a ring-shaped reinforcement frame, SRS Airbags and whiplash-reducing front seats all provide outstanding protection.
EyeSight-equipped vehicles (fitted as standard on all current XV, Forester, Outback, Impreza and Levorg models) offer substantially enhanced preventative safety performance. Acting as a second pair of eyes on the road, EyeSight was the first ever driver assist system to use stereo cameras to detect objects such as vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. A Europe-wide survey of Subaru owners in 2018 found that EyeSight had prevented an accident for over 30% of respondents.
In the UK and across Europe, Subaru also leads the way in setting safety standards. Euro NCAP is an independent automobile collision safety test programme carried out in Europe. It evaluates adult and child occupant protection, pedestrian protection, safety assist and how well vehicles automatically detect and prevent collisions across all derivatives of each model. All Subaru SUVs (plus Impreza and Levorg) currently hold the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. This April, Subaru triumphed over 29 other manufacturers, as we were voted the Best Manufacturer for Safety Features in the UK’s 2019 Driver Power Survey which is the UK’s largest car satisfaction survey.
Better where it matters is our mantra – and never more so than when it comes to improving safety on our roads.
